Polymer: you are plastic, and you will return to plastic. Energy is not created or destroyed; it is just converted. That is the first principle. The second principle: everything that is artificial, sooner or later, is no more than rubbish. Warning: a Malaysian inventor is developing a formula for converting plastic rubbish into fuel. The formula, which he has called "Photothermic rupture", produces a hydrocarbon which is similar to petrol. If there is one element in the environment with which people and the packing tape objects that have sprung from Jenkins' head both relate, apart from the space they share, it is rubbish. Their family and friends fall into rubbish. Their dogs scratch around in rubbish. Their giraffes eat plastic bags stuck in the branches of trees. A packing tape man obtained from Jenkins sleeps in a garbage bin in Rio de Janeiro. And it isn't because it is easy for them to live with waste, because they run the risk of being confused with other rubbish, plastic waste that isn't seen as decoration and on the contrary, angers almost everybody and should be cleaned up off the streets. There is nobody to blame, but the material.

These are some tape mannequins I installed yesterday for The District Line - a new shop in Adams Morgan (2118 18th St). inside tip: If you go there, look close at the chest of the torso mannequins and you'll see bottle nipples through the sheer (they're not set up to lactate...just yet :).

The Art of Nothing (and me eating a hot dog)

I'd heard Melissa Ichiuji was doing a street performance outside the Corcoran, a 36-hour run of doing "nothing." My friend and I decided to go see her and getting there involved quite a bit: walking from 7th and E--a decent hike. Arriving, the artist wasn't there (nor were her urine jars), just a note, "Melissa is ill." Well, what do you do?

What I did was get a pretzel and a hot dog and then I sat on her abandoned perch and tried contemplating nothing, but got distracted and contemplated instead whether to eat the hot dog first or the pretzel.

The hot dog won out.

There have been alot of evictions in my area lately--one multi-resident eviction a couple weeks ago stretched half a block. Seeing someone's material goods sprawled out onto the street is about as fun to look at as a run over animal, but when I'm doing street installations I'm drawn to charged environments like this one.

Franklin Park, where I did this, is a homeless homestead and the young professionals even avoid cutting through it. The result is the whole park has a sort of agressive tranquility.
After I'd set them up and taken a few shots, a homeless guy came up. He wanted to know if I had a baby and finding out I didn't, he dove in, pscyhoanalyzed me and concluded I really needed a wife and family. He said the greatest meal a man can have is the meal made by his wife and mother cooking in the same home.
I was getting a lot out of listening to him although at times he was getting angry, close, touching. In Brazil this sort of thing is more normal. Your personal space stops at your shoulders. But in DC the culture is more reserved and so am I.
In the end I got him to focus on the art instead of me. He didn't like the disconnectedness of the babies. He thought it would look better if the babies were facing each other like brothers, and so I did it. We left on good terms with handshakes and hugs and he told me that, "Let no man scare you from what you love" and he pointed to these babies. Pretty cool...

I had this idea yesterday walking home looking at the trash on the streets to put faces on them with a marker. I think about trash a lot. It started when I was in Bolivia. I was floored by the amount of littering and public dumping. You'll see a monster cactus with a bunch of trash all around it like it was mulch, and on the trails to peaks like El Misti, the campsites, wow, really bad. So bad I decided to off-trail it. But I think its interesting too, all the effort that goes into marketing products via their containers, which then become part of the visual landscape when its littered. On the bright side it adds color.

Hirshhorn, NIH and the New York City Department of Health are among other places that I've been filtered out. My guess is that I'm getting filtered because "GreenGuy Link O'Rama" is a XXX porn-link site hosted off the domain markjenkins.com. I'm caught in the cross-fire or rather, better put, my site is trapped between a rock and a hard place.
